This also some pretty Heavy Metal guitar solo's which were quite prevalent on the "Unite and Win" LP and put me off these guys a little at the time, but now it's just fucking great. Also the packaging is crammed full of opinions and relevant articles as was the case with a lot of Oi Polloi's earlier releases. Death By Night would be my favorite track off this ep.

Well what can I really say about this ep? Classic UK Anarcho Punk. Intelligent lyrics delivered with malice from a guy who has an instantly recognized voice. The music is great, punchy bass lines, solid guitar and drumming. A fucking great release. To me, this has always been my favorite Oi Polloi release apart from the track "Silent Minority" from one of those old Rot Compilation LP's they use to pump out.

This is the first of many of their 7" records I'll add to the blog in the next few weeks.

Satan - Kiss Of Death ep -1981

Many have been quick to point out the direct influence that Motorhead, Venom and Diamond Head had on the early development of thrash metal, but Satan tends to be sort of an aside amongst the so-called founding fathers. However, when hearing the two songs that are found here, which have their origin in the very opening of the 80s, one can’t help but take note of the direction that this band was pointing toward. It still retains a strong remnant of the hard rock tendencies of Riot’s late 70s speed work and the punk trappings that could be heard in the faster offerings of Motorhead, but the marriage of this character with the darker guitar tone pioneered by Tony Iommi definitely points towards what Slayer ended up with on “Haunting The Chapel”.

Now the important thing to remember is that this is still very far removed from the dark, tonally chromatic character that personified the 84’ Slayer EP. In essence, “Kiss Of Death” is kind of a fancier answer to Iron Maiden’s “Prowler”, complete with a similarly unforgettable lead guitar theme loaded with wah pedal noise. Throughout the song there is an underlying tendency towards Sabbath-like riffing, complete with constant trill work and brief bluesy lead fills that take their cues directly from said band’s self-titled debut and “Paranoid”. In all, this is a song that perfectly captures that loose, free flowing tendency of the earlier NWOBHM releases that didn’t fully commit to the tighter riff work that more thrashing outfits like Blitzkrieg and Diamond Head imputed into Metallica.

“Heads Will Roll” is a classic example of that crunchy, riff happy, spirit speed metal that is just a little too complex for Motorhead, yet too fast and bouncy for Sabbath. It is loaded with lead fills that intermingle with fairly elaborate riff work and Trev Robinson’s gravely growls, both of which were probably a heavy influence on Dave Mustaine once he struck out on his own with Megadeth. But it can’t be emphasized enough that unlike the aforementioned thrash band, or Maiden when they did comparatively fast songs, Satan is still working with this looser rock tendency that is more readily associated with late 70s and early 80s Judas Priest.

Although a pretty difficult to procure rarity, from a collector’s standpoint, this is a significant piece of early underground Metal history that should definitely be pursued if feasible. It has about the same significance as the early Metallica demos, though obviously there is a bit more hype surrounding them, especially here in the states. And like said demos, it is just a good load of fun to listen to, in spite, or rather because of its archaic nature.

From Sweden comes ex-members of Demon System 13, Cult of Luna, Separation, and Greed playing some rugged and heavy hardcore/punk with slight touches of dissonant melody and a good dose of speed. I'm not familiar with Separation or Greed, but this is a lot more aggressive and darker than D.S.-13 was, and it's really not very much like Cult of Luna at all. Think plodding chord progressions, scathing vocal screams, lots of textured distortion, solid tempo variation, etc. At times I must say I hear bits and pieces that remind me a little bit of the His Hero is Gone type of stuff, but this is different... I can't put my finger on it. I like the fact that everything plays an equal role. The basslines are very important, the drum fills are tight, the guitars aren't dominant, the vocals mingle well, and so on. "Dehumanizer" starts out with some faster and more straightforward hardcore/punk that definitely has a Swedish crust sort of atmosphere to it, later slowing down to a destructive pace - driven by bass and drums... but the straightforward Scandinavian attack makes a return and never lets up during the brief "Empire". Meanwhile "I, the Parasite" is slower and heavier, bearing slight similarities to Cult of Luna but with a rawer sound and a more stripped down, direct approach. But it's also longer than the other songs and has a lot of nice dissonance and repetition working in its favor. I like the recording. The bass tone is fucking awesome and plays a huge role in the throbbing low-end that drives the material, the drums sound natural and crisp, the guitars are appropriately distorted - heavy but with a fuzzy sheen, and the vocals are unrelenting, mixed in perfectly with the music. No complaints here. They might be a bit more powerful with a cleaner mix, but I think that taking everything into consideration this unpolished but not lacking recording style is very effective. The CD-R comes in a plain white sleeve with the band name spraypainted on the front and the tracklist on the back. Inside are several loose xeroxes with lyrics and photos, as well as song explanations. The lyrics (most of which are in English) tend to deal with depression, capitalism, and the ways of the working world, best summed up by the explanation of the final track, "I, the Parasite": "A lyric on the subject of the everyday war against depression, wage slavery, and the consequences of living under capitalism. I've always wanted to hate rather than fear." This is a solid release. I assume it's basically a demo, but either way it's a great start for this band. My eyes are peeled for future efforts... The band started up 2008 with Mattis (Dobermann Cult) and Doltz (Dobermann Cult, The Dontcares). Mattis did the drumming and screaming and Doltz the guitars and Bass. When we in march got a gig booked we asked Tobbe (Vicious Art, The Dead) and Yasse (Afflicted) to join us. After that gig we decided to record 7 songs for a 7" to be released by Flat Black Recordings. Later Poffen of Totalitär joined us. Andre replaced Tobbe on bass and pulko replaced Doltz on guitar.

From what I read on the liner notes this would appear to be The Executes one and only full length. Most people would remember them from the Split 12" with German punk's Inferno released on Pushead's label. This is way less thrashy than their earlier work and as with Gastunk they seem to have taken a large influence from UK heavy weights like the Southern Death Cult and Killing Joke. This is a great record for those sombre moments, it has a lot of really nice guitar work and some awesome vocals. "The Human of the Ghoul" now is that an awesome song title or what!!

Broken Bones are from England and were formed by guitarist Tony "Bones" Roberts in 1983 after he left Discharge. The original lineup was Tony's brother Tezz (also a former member of Discharge) on bass, Nobby as the vocalist and drummer Bazz. Their first single release was the January 1984 "Decapitated". The follow up single "Crucifix" was released in May of 1984. Tezz left the band to join U.K.Subs and friend and roadie Hoddy took over on bass. This new line-up recorded the bands first album "Dem Bones", and toured Europe & USA.

Hoddy then left to join Conflict, and Tezz resumed bass playing duties, and the F.O.A.D. album was released.

The band then had several line-up changes with Nobby leaving to live in America and Tezz once more departing. Hoddy returned to play bass and sing. The band released the "Seeing Thru My Eyes" ep with this 3-piece line-up. Eventually the band ground to a halt.

Bones reformed the band with a new line up of Cliff on drums, Quiv on vocals and Darren "Thrasher" Harris (of Exit Condition) on bass. This is where the band took a more metal turn with their music, releasing "Losing Control". Two more albums were to follow with the 12 inch release "Religion is Responsible" and another album "Stitched Up". After these albums release, the band's touring and recording fell into remission.

In 1996 Broken Bones reformed. Bones as on guitar, Quiv on vocal, Hoddy on bass and Dave on drums. They released their first studio album in 8 years, "Without Conscience" in 2001 and in 2004, they released "Time For Anger, Not Justice". Both albums bring the band back to their roots as they play the brand of hardcore they're most well known for. They still gig and tour regularly. (Wikipedia)

I've always had a soft spot for this band ever since I first heard them on the Sound Pollution compilation "Kamikaze attacked America" with the track "The day the earth caught fire". It's just good Horror fueled Punk Rock with the obligatory nod to the Misfits. This is only one of about three Picture Disc's I own as I think they are a silly medium and I would prefer the extra costs involved in production to go toward a proper sleeve.

Simply a classic split of UK Anarcho Thrash that was very hard to find when released due to the fact that they all sold out pretty much straight away.

Generic swing wildly between all out thrash and melodic hippy folk, and yes it works. Great tracks.
Electro Hippies play fucking fast but even it out with some nice moody moments and a penchant for tongue in cheek lyrics. This recording feature's one Jeff Walker of Carcass fame amongst the Hippy line up.
